This is a grebe. I’ve seen them. They dive deep in the water to find food. Beautiful!
Yes, it’s a Grebe! This particular type (black-necked grebe) visits us during the winter months. It’s amazing how they travel for thousands of miles across the sea. And I agree, it’s exciting to see them dive deep to find food. Thank you for your visit and comments 🙂
He was looking straight at you. What a different shaped head! 💜
Black-necked Grebes have such a unique beauty and mesmerizing eyes 🙂 😀
Oh yes they are very much! You did a great job capturing them (◡‿◡✿)
Such a fluffy cutie, looking straight in the camera! We only have Little grebes, they don’t look much like grebes without the typical plumage, but the eyes cannot be confused with no other bird 🙂
Ah, yes, we have Little grebes too! As you say, their eyes are mesmerizing ❤
This Black-necked Grebe is a winter bird here, so it's really nice to see them during the cold months. I am amazed how these small birds can cross oceans 🙂
Yes, it is amazing. They cover such distances without a chance to sit and rest.
I went for a Kingfisher hunt twice this week. No sighting 😦 But there was a Robin who came very close to me. Next time I will have some bird food with me ❤
I am sure the Kingfisher will visit you in natural time! (But I understand the frustration, especially when we are excited to see such a beautiful bird) The Robin must have been very charming! ❤
Yes he was 🙂 I got some bird food for our next meeting ❤
Hello Takami.
Winter beauty and beautiful photo. I love it.
Have a good day!
Hello Matti,
Thank you for your visit and comment. I’m very happy you like this Black-neck Grebe. They visit us in the winter.

こんにちは!いつもありがとうございます:D
赤い目のハジロカイツブリ、魅力的ですね♪
一目惚れしてしまいました(*^^*)
What a beautiful bird, and the dreamy, cold water surrounding it🙂
Thank you Sylvie ❤
I am happy you like this beautiful Black-necked Grebe. This photo was made during the early evening of Christmas, so it was very cold indeed. But, as you say, the sky turned a beautiful purple colour 🙂
🙂
I find the Grebes to be so photogenic! Beautiful shot, dear Takami ❤
Thank you Helen! I’m so happy you like Grebes too. There eyes are especially striking, they are natural “models” in my opinion! 😀
I agree 😀
Beautiful! I take it this is a loon?
Thank you Josh! This is a Black-necked Grebe in winter plumage: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-necked_grebe
They are winter birds here and a very welcome sight 🙂
Oohhh, I probably just wanted it to be a loon. Do you get loons in Japan? (‘Loon’ meaning the bird, not the slang term for crazy people).
Loons are another winter bird, but are usually found around Kyushu – the southern part of the country. Regarding “looney loons”…we have plenty of them here too, LOL 😀
Haha, looney loons are plentiful all over the world, it seems 😀
Such an intensely present gaze, Takami!
Thank you Carol! I love the red eyes on Black-necked Grebes, and this one had an especially striking gaze 🙂 ❤
Aw…he’s posing for you!
Thank you Jill! His red eyes & striking gaze were beautiful 🙂
Looking right at the camera. Beautiful. 🙂
I had the same thought!
Thanks for stopping by 🙂 Really appreciate it.
Thank you Diana! I love their red eyes and this particular grebe had a striking gaze 🙂
So cute! I love the flow of the water too.
Thank you! Black-necked Grebes are tiny (especially in comparison to ducks) and it’s amazing how them can swim across oceans. They visit us during the winter months and are a real joy to watch.
🙂
So lovely and peaceful. ❤
Thank you my friend ❤ I "met" this bird on Christmas day 🙂
Great shot – the look on the bird made me smile!
Thank you Noelle. I hope your 2019 is off to a great start 🙂
Happy New Year 🎊🎉
Thank you 🙂
Happy New Year to you, too!
You captured those beautiful red eyes, awesome, Takami!
Thank you Donna! Black-necked Grebes visit us during the cold winter months, with their grey non-breeding plumage. They are so tiny, it’s amazing that they cross oceans. I’m so glad you liked their red eyes – I thought they are beautiful too. 🙂
Lovely shot.
Thank you. This was a beautiful bird.
It is! 🙂
