I love your photos, Takami, and I have to tell you that I adore this one with the mother duck and the ducklings. It’s very touching.
Thank you Mihaela. I am so glad you liked it 🙂
What a great mama she is, Takami! Always looking back to make sure her babies are safe. Beautiful birds, love those eyes 🙂
Thank you Inese! Yes, she is a wonderful Mama. What I love about the Little Grebes is how both parents cooperate and work hard to raise their babies. And I love their eyes too 🙂 ❤
I wonder if duck families have similar feelings of affection/attachment as human families? I like to think they do, but I guess all we can do is make inferences based on their behavior.
I often wonder the same, Josh.
I too, like to think they have similar feelings of attachment but whatever conclusions we humans come to will most likely be some form of inference or even speculation 🙂
From my personal (subjective) and non-scientific observations. it appears there is a definite attachment/affection between most parents and chicks. (From the chicks’ point of view mom and dad are the main source of food of course😋)
As the human observer it always bittersweet because I know this “attachment” is but for a limited time. In the case if these Little Grebes, the adults will raise 2-3 groups of chicks in a single breeding season, so the first group of chicks is “kicked out” in order to prepare for the next.
It was still early in the breeding season for this family, so I knew there was a definite possibility for these chicks to be forced out (after a period of growth) by their parents. So, it made me pour more emotion into each shot than I should 🥺💔
That is something to think about, the fact that few parent/child relationships last as long as humans’ do. I imagine there’d have to be some sort of bond/affection between baby birds and their parents to facilitate survival, but I’m guessing it’s not experienced in the same way as it is among humans.
As the average life span for these smaller birds is quite short – only a few years at most – I imagine this factors in with how long bonds/affection last and the nature of the relationship.
I personally feel that long-term bonds are not limited to our species. That being said, humans have evolved quite a bit during our relatively short time here, and our relationships uniquely reflect that complexity.
Incredible photo, again.
I always look forward to your photos.
Thank you! I appreciate it 🙂
It was good I got to see your newest post first, now I know how touching it was to see the grebe family 🙂 These photos of yours are truly treasures of nature ~ incredible, Takami and wish you well.
Thanks so much for the encouraging words! As you noticed, these tiny birds became a “summer project” – I followed 2 families and it was (and still is) very exciting to observe them.
The newest post (the Hagibis survivor family) is a small family of mama/papa/2 chicks who were born in October.
The family in this post was 5(!) chicks and a very busy mom and dad 😀
My first glimpse of them is found here:

Can you find all 5 chicks? 😀
Wishing you a great weekend too.
Superb photo! Happy anniversary!
Thank you Julie!
We appreciate your warm wishes 🙂
Lovely. I hope you were safe from the recent typhoon.
Thank you, I’m happy you liked this photo. I also appreciate your kind thoughts on the recent typhoon. Fortunately, my neighborhood did not suffer major damage.
おめでとうございます !
有難うございます。
I agree wholeheartedly with your request for proper credit of all photos. I have some photos of my own that I would not want to share, but I am no professional. Mostly I do a Creative Commons search. The words in my blog are mine, and I would hate to see them pirated by anyone. Recently, my husband found one of his research documents pirated word for word by someone who did not really understand what he was reading. We could tell because of the change in *title.*
Hello Beth,
Thank you for your visit and comment.
It is much appreciated and very informative. I am sorry your husband had to go through that experience. It is very discouraging and of course, it is not right. I agree, your work belongs to you and should not be pirated by anyone. I feel it applies to *all* creative endeavors, including writing and photography.
Thanks again, for stopping by.
What a beautiful family and moment! Thank you for sharing.

Hello, Thanks for your comment.
As my country has strict privacy laws regarding street photography, I do not publish photos featuring people on my blog.

You’re welcome❣️
Splendid family with a lot of tenderness.
Thank you 🙂
Yes, they are a wonderful family. The tenderness between the parent bird and baby bird moved me.
Happy Anniversary! What a wonderful occasion! And a beautiful photo.

Twice happy you continue to enjoy more views of this Little Grebe family – they are wonderful birds 🙂
Thank you Takami for your beautiful comments and blessings! Your photos are always amazing. Peace and wonderful blessings to you both.
Such a tender, loving moment, Takami.
Thank you very much Carol. This particular Little Grebe family has been wonderful “soul therapy” for me… 🙂
What a lovely, tender moment you captured, Takami. “Please stay with me” could equally be the wish of the little ones, who don’t want Mom to leave them, or Mom’s, who does’t want her babies to stray too far (and maybe a gentle invitation to the little straggler in the back (if my eyes don’t deceive me) to catch up) . 😊
Thank you Tanja ❤
Yes, yes, and yes — have have read into all 3 meanings of "please stay with me" and your eyes are very sharp too – there is a straggler in the back 😀
I appreciate that you took the time to look at my image with such care ❤
I am glad I didn’t overlook the little straggler, Takami, nor any of the meanings of the gentle admonishment.
Happy October weekend to you and your family. 🍁
I love your photos of the wee ones. When do their eyes change?
Hello Noelle,
Thank you so much. All baby birds are adorable, but these Little Grebe babies look especially vulnerable, especially their eyes – as you have noticed 🙂
To my understanding, Little Grebes take about 1 year to mature into adult birds. I have observed these babies for almost 6 months and their eyes have still not turned bright yellow. Therefore, I assume the eye-change happens between 6 months to 1 year after they hatch 🙂
Thanks for the info. How nice you can see them grow up!
毎回、素敵な画像に感動を頂いています。有難うございます(^^♪
